Everyone Can Learn Something!
August is here. It’s time for back to school.
The mornings and afternoons are filled with school buses, kids walking and biking to and from school, and parents dropping off their kids. It's an exciting yet stressful time as parents and kids adjust to new routines. The increased activity on the roads during this time can also be stressful for other drivers.
This month’s Safety Zone will focus on back-to-school safety tips to keep everyone safe during this busy time.
One of the most dangerous times for children is in the morning hours when they wait for the school bus. Children waiting at the end of driveways or near busy intersections may need to cross the road. It can be especially risky during darker months when days are shorter. Teaching children to cross the road safely is crucial They should stand at least six feet away from the curb while waiting for the bus. If they must cross the street, they should wait for all traffic to stop and ensure the bus’s red lights are flashing and that the stop sign is extended.
As a driver, it's essential to slow down when approaching a school bus with flashing lights. Be prepared to stop. Children can be unpredictable, so assume there might be a child crossing nearby, even if it seems clear. Additionally, ensure your child has reflective strips on their backpack or shoes for high visibility.
For children walking to school, it's important for them to use sidewalks and crosswalks, and to avoid distractions like phones or headphones. If there’s no sidewalk, they should walk on the side of the road facing the traffic flow.
If your child rides a bicycle to school, they should wear a properly fitted helmet. Have working lights and reflectors on bike, and know the rules of the road. Parents should ensure their child is following these safety measures by occasionally monitoring their commute.
Drivers should be patient with parents and bus drivers as they figure out their routes. They should anticipate the worst and be prepared to stop when school bus lights are flashing. It’s crucial not to take risks around buses, as the penalties for disregarding school bus safety can be severe.
Lastly, it’s important for drivers to treat every bus as if it were carrying their own child. Developing good driving habits and being mindful of school buses is key to ensuring safety for everyone. And remember, RedSpeed cameras will be active in some school zones at the start of the school year. So, slow down and stay safe! Have a great school year!
